Safety

Safety is at the forefront of parents, carers, teachers and leaders minds when an educational activity visit is arranged. We hope to put your mind at rest for the length of the visit with the information provided on this page.

Our Centre is registered and licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA). Regular inspections of the Centre are completed of the facilities, equipment and instruction given. Centres are only approved and licensed once all criteria have been successfully met.

On all our activities every safety aspect is clearly explained to everybody. The young people are encouraged to check each other’s safety equipment, giving them responsibility, with the Instructors completing the final checks.

There are a few activities where a National Governing Body does not exist and here, all our Instructors are assessed internally. Instructors are not able to lead an activity in these activities until this has been completed successfully. All equipment at the Centre is checked regularly and maintained to meet safety regulations.

The Centre is a BCU (British Canoe Union) and RYA (Royal Yachting Association) approved Centre. These two organisations assures you that any course in Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, Windsurfing and Powerboating at Grafham Water Centre is provided by qualified and experienced staff, with the correct equipment that meets safety standards.

The BCU and the RYA perform annual inspections and spot checks on courses to ensure the quality of instruction and the correct safety procedures are followed.

Qualifications gained at the Centre from either the BCU or the RYA are recognised and respected in the majority of countries around the world.
