NATIONAL OUTDOOR LEARNING AWARD

RECOGNISING THEIR DEVELOPMENT

AIM

The National Outdoor Learning Award is an award scheme which celebrates and captures participation in an outdoor learning environment. The award is NOT a series of hoops to jump through. If individuals participate in the learning experience, they will be given the award.

The aim is for personalised learning where the learners will say how they are going to demonstrate the skill and be able to self-assess when they have done it. At the end of their stay, they will have a record of their own learning.

OVERVIEW

On the learning outcome sheet there are six value areas: Safe, Respect, Learn, Yourself, Others and the Environment.  These correlate to the 18 skills that are based on numerous learning theories and the National Curriculum.

The circles get filled in when a skill has been demonstrated. The circles represent Some, Most or All of the time. The learners don’t have to fill in every box to complete the award.

The most desirable outcome is that the participants lead the award themselves and use reflective practices to decide where they fit in with the skills as they progress through different activities and their general stay.  If needed, then they can use peer assessment to help each other decide where they are.   A last resort is instructors leading, as this removes a lot of the self-learning.
